Interactions of AKD with Other Web-End Additives, 1992 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Sizing loss has been an issue in the production of some alkaline paper in North America, while our European colleagues have not had the same experience. Work was undertaken to understand this phenomena by looking at differences in wet-end systems and learning about the interactions of different wet-end additives. Mill data was collected for "good and bad" paper, paper analyses conducted, and laboratory experiments carried out to study the impact of other additives on the AKD reaction possibilities. The results show that AKD hydrolysis is impacted by other wet-end additives and that this competing reaction may play a role in sizing loss.
