Surface Bonding/Sizing Agents: Keys to Improved Performance and Runnability Under Alkaline Conditions, 1992 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

The use of surface sizing agents has increased dramatically as fine paper mills have converted to alkaline paper making. The utility of the size press is enhanced through the use of these additives because of the effect that they have on linting and dusting, toner adhesion, coefficient of friction (COF), machine runnability, and the traditional sizing capabilities. The focus of this paper is the effect that specific size press additives: polyurethanes, styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymers, and specialty tripolymer bonding/sizing agents, have on these problems. From mill data and pilot paper machine information, it is clear that surface bonding/sizing agents are, and will continue to be, keys to improved performance and runnability under alkaline conditions.
