My TAPPI Story: Doug Coffin
TAPPISAFE
Interest in deinking postconsumer grades of wood free wastepaper has risen dramatically recently because of the large supply and low cost of office waste and because of government legislation. This type of wastepaper is usually heavily contaminated with laser and xerographic toners which are difficult to remove using conventional deinking processes. PPG Industries, Inc. has developed and commercialized a patented chemical system for deinking wastepaper grades contaminated with electrostatic inks wherein the toners are agglomerated and removed with conventional cleaning equipment such as slotted screens and centrifugal cleaners. High brightness, low dirt count pulp can be produced from office wastes through the utilization of this technology.
