Influence of Dissolved Ions on Alum Cationicity Under Alkaline Papermaking Conditions, 1992 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
The isoelectric point of alum when titrated with NaOH under moderate shear was at approximately pH 7.7. In the presence of calcium ion the isoelectric point was increased to above pH 8, the effect being greater with increasing Ca++ levels. This effect was somewhat offset by the presence of additional sulfate ion. With Ca++ present the available or effective cationicity of alum and poly aluminum chloride were similar at pH 8.
