Anionic Potato Starch - A New Wet-End Additive for Papermakers, 1992 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
The use of cationic starch in the wet-end of the papermaking system is well known. However, the efficiency of cationic starch may be compromised under certain conditions which are
characterized by low pH, high alum usage, hard water, poor secondary fiber quality and high degree of system closure. Various developments have been made to cope with these adverse conditions. These include higher degree of substitution cationic starches and amphoteric starches. A new approach developed by our company is to use an anionic potato starch which is found to be effective in high acidity and hardness conditions. This product is a modified potato starch containing carboxyl groups with a degree of substitution of 0.05.
