The mechanism and function of wet-end chemicals are influenced by their size, shape, and chemistry. A series of representations of the microscopic realm of papermaking helps clarify the differences among wet-end chemical systems. Conventional dual polymer systems function through large scale bridging by high molecular weight polymers. Retention is achieved largely through the filtration of these large flocs on the fiber mat. On the other hand, microparticle technology produces small flocs by charge neutralization that are adsorbed along fiber surfaces, leaving pore spaces more open for dewatering. The small size and large number of the particles in the microparticle system compared to traditional systems are the keys to this different mechanism.
