A laboratory device, the Retention Process Analyzer, was used to study the influence of high shear pulse on retention with a single polyacrylamide retention aid system. The results showed that the retention was impaired by a high shear pulse during almost the entire retention process. The retention decrease was found to depend on the shear level, the duration and timing of the high shear pulse. The retention suffered most in the first stage of the retention process near the maximum retention point.
