In today’s changing environment, the demands on conventional retention aid programs are steadily increasing due to increasing filler levels, higher machine speeds, the influx of recycled fibers into the furnish, increased levels of closure of the paper mill’s white water system. and higher sheet quality specifications. In response to these demands, retention and drainage programs utilizing a microparticle component, such as, bentonite clay or colloidal silica with a conventional single flocculant or dual polymer program are finding increasing use in paper and paperboard mills. These microparticle programs are superior to conventional polymer programs.

Increased filler retention and drainage rate with no sacrifice in formation have been the primary reason for a mill’s transition to a higher performance retention program. Historically, laboratory studies using standard retention and drainage experiments have claimed several potential reasons for the benefits of a colloidal silica based microparticle retention program. A case study in one fine paper mill using a colloidal silica based program further exemplifies the benefits achieved while using the program.
