In many cases the growth in the consumption of waste paper by the world’s paper industry has been and will continue to be made possible by the advances in recycling technology. The primary objective of waste paper processing is to produce waste paper pulp of a quality such that tissue and hygiene paper of a suitable standard for the current market conditions can be produced. As the technology of recycling progresses the difference between virgin pulp and recycled pulp is narrowing. In each of the three major paper producing regions of the world, recent developments in recycling technology have addressed the local requirements.

The area of waste paper processing I have chosen to discuss in this paper, is that of recycling and deinking by chemical treatment under neutral pH stock preparation conditions.

We believe we have come some way to improving the papermaking process and reducing the overall environmental impact by changing the chemistry of the system and where appropriate, improving the efficiency of the plant by the installation of a low cost vacuum device for ink laden foam and light stickies removal; and this will be supported by laboratory and mill trial effects.
