The advantages of shoe presses versus roll presses in many applications have been well documented. However, the early open, belt-type shoe press designs have experienced serious operational problems/limitations. These problems have been successfully overcome with later sleeve-type shoe press designs.
Most presses so far are double felted and installed on linerboard and medium. Recently, however, quite a few new installations are operating on bulk sensitive board grades. A few presses are also single felted. In addition to this different shoe lengths, and a completely new design with a possibility to change the nip profile in the press nip on-the-run, gives new possibilities to tailor-make a press for different board-grades. It is possible to have a flat pressure-profile suitable for bulk sensitive grades and a profile with high exit pressure for high density grades with an on-the-run change in the press.
The shoe press is equipped with a crown-compensating counter press roll. This design with loading cylinders in both the shoe unit and the counter press roll enables control of the CD pressure profile. This is possible because the cylinder rows in both rolls are sectioned and matched.
The new shoe press design is now operating at several mills. It has recently started up on the world’s largest (10.16 m wire width) linerboard machine at Obbola Linerboard in Sweden. Operating results from these installations are presented.
