Demands by new printing and ink technologies have focused greater attention on the surface treatment of paper.
The use of zirconium based compounds has demonstrated many advantages in addressing problems in surface treatments and coatings. With surface treatments, especially size press applications, these include improvements in linting, dusting, and surface size efficiency.
Zirconium compounds have demonstrated the ability to improve the efficiency of synthetic surface sizes such as styrene maleic anhydride, allowing reduced dosages to achieve equivalent effect.
Cost benefits include the ability to increase internal CaC03 content, the ability to obtain good results with low cost starch derivatives, and improved surface size derived BOD levels during repulping.
