Sizing at Neutral and Alkaline pH with a Rosin-Based Size, 1993 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

A gap in pH has existed between acid and alkaline sizing environments. Data is presented showing a rosin-based size that is effective in a broad pH range that extends well into alkaline pH. The effects of wet end chemicals, application methods and calcium carbonate on sizing efficiency are also presented. In addition, a short summary of mill experience with this size is given. The results indicate that this size may give papermakers the opportunity to use a rosin-based size in situations where only synthetic sizes had been viable sizing alternatives.
