The presence of interfering substances in the stock streams of both secondary and virgin fiber furnishes is detrimental to the papermaking process. For example, fines and filler retention, process chemical efficiency and machine runnability can be reduced, while process and product variability increases. This paper provides an overview on the subject of interfering compounds, including; descriptions of the process implications, chemical composition and sources of these materials. Also reviewed are measurement techniques for the detection and quantification of interfering substances. Finally, control strategies which minimize the impact of these substances are presented.
