Recently, a new product was invented in Scandinavia and then introduced to the U.S. This product is made using a patented manufacturing process. Numerous applications in Scandinavia, Europe and the U.S. are showing many benefits. Initially, the product, polyaluminum hydroxy chloride, was used to give improved sizing response for acid and alkaline papermaking. Subsequent applications show that excellent charge neutralization of colloidal particles can be obtained with this product versus alum. In addition, paper machines with a BaSO(4) scale problem can eliminate it with a properly controlled polyaluminum hydroxy chloride application.
