Cationic polymers have been used extensively for control of dissolved and colloidal materials detrimental to the paper making process. In recent laboratory and mill experiences with cationic agents, we found that commonly used materials such as alum, TiO2 and wet end starch to name a few can act synergistically or in competition with cationic polymers. We attempted to understand the chemistry and to develop strategies for control and simplification of the paper making process.
