The use of charge analysis for characterizing and monitoring the paper machine wet end is continuing to gain acceptance in the paper industry. Still, much confusion exists in choosing which charge analysis technique to use and in interpreting its results. This paper will review the techniques currently available to the papermaker; describing the types of information generated by each and their relative strengths and weaknesses. The fundamentals of each technique, as well as its practical applications, will be discussed. The paper will also include a detailed case study of the optimization of an alkaline fine paper machine using charge analyses. The results of the optimization were: (1) significant improvements in retentions, (2) significant reductions in chemical costs, and (3) significant increases in machine speed and productivity.
