Many recent technological developments in the paper industry have indicated the need for improved control of wet end chemistry processes. This project was undertaken to evaluate two on-line streaming potential sensors that could be useful in such applications. The experimental approach followed was incorporate the two sensors in a flow loop. Various chemical treatments whose effects on fiber surface charge were known were examined. Sensor responses to these treatments were recorded and compared to reference off-line microelectrophoresis measurements. Bleached kraft, linerboard, tmp, and ctmp pulps were employed in the study.

The results showed that the two on-line sensors responded to the chemical treatments in logical and expected ways. The two sensors correlated well with one another and with the off-line reference measurements. It was concluded that the two sensors could be effectively employed in wet end chemistry process control strategies and that the paper industry should examine them closely.
