Anionic potato starch was developed to cope with high acidity conditions and for dual starch technique applications. Further developments suggest that this type of starch can be effectively used for ionic control, reducing the risk of over-cationization commonly seen in the papermaking environment. This paper examines ionic charge conditions in different paper grades and identifies anionic sources at the wet-end, using streaming current detection technique. Also illustrated in this paper are the wet-strength grades and the systems where the addition levels of cationic starch are high. A successful use of anionic starches in improving retention and sheet strength involving cationic calcium carbonate filler is also discussed.
