The conventional two roll pond size press has been a standard component of paper machines for many years, but it has limitations. Gate roll size presses eliminated some of the problems related to the size press pond but proved difficult to operate and maintain. The current designs of premetering size presses are actually comprised of three pieces of equipment – a size press plus two short dwell blade/rod coaters. This configuration is expensive, takes a lot of machine space, and requires high pumping rates. In most cases, very few, if any of the existing size press components can be reused, and it may be necessary to remove dryers and relocate drives. New designs of premetering devices can be retrofitted on all three configurations of conventional size presses. The new designs take less space, and both equipment purchase and installation costs are significantly less than the size press plus two short dwell coated design. The new designs also do not require the high pumping rates requisite with the use of short dwell coaters as applicators.
