Microbiological colonization of papermachines can interfere with machine runnability and the production of quality paper. In order to control microbiological growth in papermaking systems, a wide variety of antimicrobial agents are used to reduce colonization of papermachines by bacteria and fungi. Efficacy of these agents is mediated by the specific microorganisms present in the furnish and the components of the furnish. A rapid method for determining minimal inhibitory concentrations of antimicrobial agents has been developed using reduction-oxidation indicators. This method takes thirty minutes to set up in contaminated paper mill furnishes and provides results in one to four hours. In contrast, the classic technique requires five days from start of testing to final results. The new method reports good correlation with machine use data and inhibitory biocides.
