Deposits imbedded in paper machine wires, wet press felts and dryer fabrics can hurt machine runnability. to avoid this situation, it is important to select the proper chemical program to solubilize and remove unwanted contaminants from machine clothing. The selection process involves deposit analysis and product screening methods. Products are evaluated in an off-machine screening device which recirculates chemical solutions through a soiled fabric sample. An effective cleaning program can provide several benefits to the papermaker, including reduced downtime, uniform sheet quality, extended fabric life and increased machine speeds. An outline of the selection process, its implementation and resulting benefits is presented in a case history. The profile focuses on a paper machine producing alkaline fine paper and the cleaning program for the wet press felts.
