Previous work on an IBM 3800 high speed printer showed that some alkaline fine paper converting and end-use problems can be attributed to the transfer of sizing agent and other materials to the paper handling equipment. Several methods of reducing the transfer of sizing agent or hydrolyzed sizing agent to the paper handling rolls on an IBM 3800 were investigated, including: high molecular weight and big melting point sizing agents. A wide range of structurally modified sizing agents were also made in an attempt to modify the properties of the sizing agent once it has been transferred to the paper handling equipment. Sizing agents with four different types of reactive functionality were tested.
