In North America today, approximately 80% of fine paper production is alkaline. The majority of the conversions occurred over the past five years and with that experience, most producers are looking toward increasing filler contents from current levels (12-18%) to higher loadings of 25-30%. The focus of the work presented in this document is to understand the effects of different morphology precipitated calcium carbonate loadings on AKD sizing, while maintaining the optical properties of opacity and brightness at elevated sheet loadings. The data presented is taken from laboratory handsheet studies.
