What will paper machine rooms look like in year 2000? They will contain the most advanced and productive paper machines ever known to man. This paper will review emerging trends in regard to the support systems required to permit efficient and profitable operations. We will review emerging trends in machine room construction, stock preparation, broke handling, paper machines, water management systems and additives. What will the paper machine of year 2000 be like? About the only thing certain, is that they will be faster and produce higher quality paper. While few large paper machines with wire widths of about 380-390 inches are being built today, the majority of todays current paper machines are recycled mini machines with wire widths in the 190-200 inch range. The mini-machines have smaller tonnage capacity and are being primarily used for containerboard products. Due to depressed product prices, few printing and writing, and newsprint paper machines are currently being built. Lets look at emerging trends observed in the new machine room of today, so that we can better understand what is coming in year 2000.
