It is a certainty that tomorrow’s paper mills will deal with recycle fiber more than today’s mills. Virgin fiber production in this country will remain relatively unchanged so as mills add production capacity, recycle fiber will fill the additional fiber demands. As recycle becomes an ever increasing percentage of the fiber furnish, the number of trips through the paper machine will increase. Unlike the past, the increased reuse of fiber will require the paper mill to adapt to the variability and deterioration in fiber quality. Future equipment will lend fibers in layers in the headbox to achieve desired quality parameters. The development of high wear and low friction ceramics will allow the integration of the headbox and the forming section into one unit. This design will give the papermaker the tools he needs to build internal sheet characteristics to meet future grade requirements with recycle fiber.
