The recent history of papermachine press section clothing development contains four breakthroughs in fabric design and construction. 1. In the mid 1950’s, “Synthetic Fiber were incorporated into the construction of press fabrics where previously 100% wool felts were standard. 2. In the early 1960’s, “Needle Punch” techniques were introduced to lock individual fibers to woven base structures and fiber batt under-lays. This technique replaced the traditional “napping” process done to the woven base 3. In the late 1960’s, “Filament Yarn” multi-filament and mono-filament were introduced to toughen woven base structures. Filament yarn eventually replaced the traditional “Spun Yarn” in the base fabric. 4. In the mid-1980’s, Open Ended Pin Seam” felts were introduced to the industry, allowing papermakers to install press fabrics without having to break down the machine. These four events can be considered the major breakthroughs in the recent history of press section clothing development. Of course, there were many other improvements in clothing construction, design, raw materials and chemical treatments. All these improvements contributed to better felt and fabric performance up to the present.
