The simultaneous on-line measurement of a key electrokinetic parameter, zeta potential, and a key papermaking process chemistry parameter, drainage represents a unique capability which is much more effective and efficient than manual methods. Runnability of a paper machine can be assessed by on-line measurement of zeta potential variability, as expressed by its standard deviation. The Microparticulate Process can be optimized by operating at the zeta potential which produces maximum drainage. An example is give of on-line paper machine monitoring.
