The true measure of a successful retention system is maximum output of quality paper from the mill, elimination of interferences circulating in the process, and a reduction of effluent or other waste. A good measure of the power of a retention system is to examine the whitewater. If you find a lot of starch and anionic trash, it can pay to question your approach. New silicas and starches can now overcome traditional retention system obstacles in acid and alkaline groundwood furnishes. With the potential for retention systems to succeed even in groundwood, and many positive effects (beyond retention itself) in alkaline wood-free papermaking already proven, retention systems have reached a new plateau in papermaking.
