This paper reflects part of the experience acquired with a cationic polymer – bentonite microparticle retention aid system at Domtar Windsor’s alkaline fine paper mill. Retention is maintained at a constant level with the polymer by an automatic control system on white water consistency. An increase in the stability of the wet end was a direct result of this control loop. This procedure and access to a process database made it possible for us to identify and analyze some important variables affecting retention. These variables are: basis weight, pigment type, white water consistency set point, polymer concentration and white water conductivity.
