Absorbency phenomena are critical to the performance and end use specifications of a wide range of paper and board products as well as tissue and towelling. The factors however that affect absorbency have previously been poorly understood and unable to be fully characterized. Our recent research has identified key parameters of relevance and examined a range of experimental techniques capable of quantifying and qualifying various absorbency and absorbency related phenomena. Parameters of interest include: absorbency rate, absorbency capacity, average pore size, pore size distribution, void volume, wettability, surface energy. This paper describes some of the important techniques and demonstrates their capability for use in the diagnosis and solution of process and product related problems in a range of paper and board products.
