The performance of high vacuum dewatering elements (flat boxes) has been studied and quantified with an experimental program. Dewatering of a 26 pound per 1,000 square foot (127 gsm) virgin kraft sheet was thoroughly characterized using a pilot machine. Curves to predict dewatering were developed. Machine speed, vacuum level, incoming sheet solids content, and flat box configuration all strongly influence dewatering performance. Field data has been used to corroborate the laboratory results and to compare them to dewatering of different weights and composition kraft sheets. Using vacuum levels and novel box geometries, machine performance can be optimized for sheet dryness, wire drag, and vacuum use.
