Importance of on-line zeta potential analyses of pulp furnish for optimized wet-end control has been recognized over the years. However the absolute value of on-line data was very larger than off-line counterparts. To cope with this drawback, we developed a new method to calibrate an on-line sensor. The magnitude and trend of properly calibrated on-line streaming potential measurements became correlated well with off-line electrophoresis measurements. The slight deviation point between two measurements showed the adsorptivity difference of cationic chemicals with furnish components. In a fine papermachine trial, zeta potential did not fall immediately even after the cationic polymer addition was ended. This was attributed to the residual effects of polymers remained in the recirculating white water system. In a newsprint papermachine trial, zeta potential varied due to unknown disturbances. By multi-regression analysis of process data base, pulp freeness and thermo-mechanical pulp ration were found to be the most critical process parameters in that system. This phenomena was further elucidated using the on-line sensor in a laboratory.
