A 1.5 cm wide model plexiglas headbox receiving a continuous flow of stock from commercial headboxes has been equipped with light source/ photodetector systems to measure its point to point uniformity both in an undisturbed quiescent state and after redispersion through a 900 elbow. The two Floc Indices measured are compared directly to the Formation Index determined by the same system on the sheet produced from the furnish. In this way, it is possible to ascertain whether it is the nature of the stock or the conditions on the papermachine which are responsible for a given change in a sheet’s formation. In addition, the effect of chemical additives on the Floc Indices is readily determined both on-line and in the laboratory. A limited amount of data supporting this concept is presented.
