Many processes in papermaking are based on relatively old and therefore traditional concepts. Although modern papermaking companies make us of Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Management Information Systems (MIS), these systems in practice are mainly used for monitoring purpose and control of the processes is executed manually by the operator according to the specifications of the final product and to the papermakers experience. As a result of this, the papermaking process suffers from a number of problems. First, the paper and board products often deviate from the desired quality specifications, which leads to high losses and therefore a low efficiency. Furthermore, the production processes often suffer from production stops due to web breaks, which decreases the efficiency. Finally, non optimal machine performance gives rise to unnecessary high energy and water consumption, and intolerable pollution of the environment.
