Surface wetting properties are important in determining performance of plain paper in non-impact printing applications. In different ways, both internal size and subsequent polymeric surface treatments affect paper wettability and, therefore, ink-jet print quality. In order to investigate the combined effects of internal and surface size, absorption tests were performed using an ink-jet ink on paper with several internal size and surface size doses. Ink-jet print quality measurements were made on the same sheets. It was found that both internal and surface sizing contributed to printing performance as well as to performance in the sizing tests. Relative importance of internal to surface sizing was different in each case. One minute contact angles were the test which most closely mimicked the print-quality response.
