Styrene maleic anhydride copolymers contain carboxyl groups capable of hydrogen bonding to form films, and phenyl groups which impart water resistance. Their performance as sizing agents is dependent on having some degree of sizing in the base sheet. Addition points to size press starch are not critical, and the resins have limited effect on starch viscosity. Styrene maleic anhydride resins are anionic, and are compatible with most anionic and nonionic size press additives. Drying temperature is not critical in sizing development, and sizing is obtained immediately. The resins should be used in starch at pH values of 7.0-9.5. Foam problems can be prevented and machine cleanliness maintained with attention to starch pH, biological control, and defoamer selection.
