Demands by new printing and ink technologies have focused greater attention on the surface treatment of paper. New developments in the use of zirconium based compounds continue to offer promise in addressing problems in surface treatments and coatings. With surface treatments, especially size press applications, these include improvements in linting, dusting, ink jet printability, and surface size efficiency. Update experience in the use of zirconium compounds to improve the efficiency of various starch modifications and several synthetic surface sizes indicates that improved surface size efficiency may be obtained to improve paper quality, machine runnability, and overall costs. Cost benefits include the ability to increase internal CaCO3 content, the ability to obtain good results with low cost starch derivatives, improved “cleanup” times during printing, and the ability to use a wider range of SMA resins.
