Traditionally, approach flow screens have been the protection device for the headbox and paper machine. Normally, the basket used in this position was a perforated one. However, current trends show that a slotted approach flow screen can be much more beneficial than a perforated one. It performs not only as a protection device, but a papermachine performance enhancer. By proper selection and sizing of the approach flow screen, the performance of the paper machine can be improved dramatically. This paper discusses how the slotted approach flow screen affects the papermachine performance.
