Cationic fillers have been promoted as improving retention when used in the wet end of a paper machine. Indeed, this improvement has been seen with both PCC and cationic composite pigments. The implication from these observations is that cationic pigments are self retaining due to their attraction for the anionic fiber. While this improvement in retention is reasonable, it is not clear whether the pigments will self retain or simply improve the performance of the retention aid by absorbing some of the anionic trash. This study examines the use of cationic filler clays and determines their effect on the performance of retention aids and on the optics of the finished sheet. The use of cationic fillers as additives will also be examined.
