With the realization of the inherent need for a high charge, low molecular weight anionic trash collectors, paper makers are looking for more versatile, economical, ATC’s from that of the conventional types. SBF’s (Starch Based Fixatives) are a new generation of semi-synthetic cationic, multi-functional polymers that are providing mills with an alternative to the traditional synthetic polymers. Unlike the synthetic polymers the SBF’s have the ability the form hydrogen bonds, which have positive effects on strength, trash neutralization, and the reduction of linting. SBF’s are also more biodegradable, are made from a renewable resource and in some cases provide an economical advantage. Probably the most significant advantage of SBF’s is their selectivity to attach onto the colloidal and soluble material while leaving more of the cellulose fiber’s anionic sites open to attach with cationic wet end starch and other paper making additives. These SBF’s are becoming the ATC of choice with the Scandinavian paper maker with a growing interest in North America. This paper will explain benefits and advantages of this new generation of cationic polymer.
