The Gas Heated Paper Dryer (GHPD) is a new type of cylinder dryer which is internally heated by hot air rather than by high pressure steam. Since developing this dryer, ABB Industrial Drying has undertaken a detailed investigation to determine the drying rates which can be achieved using cylinder surface temperatures well above those of typical steam heated cylinder dryers. This involved developing a laboratory drying simulator capable of simulating the conditions in a commercial installation of a GHPD. This paper describes the laboratory simulator and test procedure, along with a discussion of the results from the study. It is shown that significantly higher drying rates can be achieved by using higher than conventional surface temperatures and that these drying rates can be increased by reducing the build-up of vapor between the sheet and the hot surface.
