A very important application of polymers in the paper and board industry is the use as retention aids or dewatering agents on the paper machine. This application has a direct influence on the product quality and on the economy of the process. The papermaking process can be defined as the formation of a sheet of paper from a diluted pulp suspension. Pulp is formed by fires, fines, fillers and chemicals suspended in water. During papermaking the fibre fraction is mechanically retained on the wire, however for retention of fines and fillers addition of retention aids is necessary. Retention aids should interact with the fines and fillers particles to attach them to the fibre fraction, however retention aids can also interact with colloidal and dissolved material but this reaction is unwanted. The priority order of interaction between the additives and the various pulp fractions depends on both the surface and charge of the particles and the characteristics of the polymer. For this reason the interactions will usually strongly be influenced by the concentration of salt.
