The Steam and Condensate (Dryer Drainage) System, as an integral part of the paper machine dryer section, is thought to have changed relatively little in its many years of existence. A review of the history of these systems offers an opportunity to assess the impact of some of those changes. It also provides insight into the nature of the Steam and Condensate Systems of the future. From the earliest “once through” systems to the modern, highly efficient, designs of today, operational flexibility has been sought while maintaining a reasonable degree of energy efficiency. In many existing systems both of these desirable qualities are compromised just to be able to dry paper.
