The change from acid to alkaline papermaking affects converters and end-users as well as papermakers. In many instances, factors that impact downstream converting performance are not readily apparent. By utilizing an iterative process with a tight feedback control loop between supplier, papermaker, converter and end-user, problem definition is improved, and both converting equipment and paper-related solutions are more rapidly identified. Such a process has been utilized as a means to improve alkaline sheet performance. Here, forms bond and cut-size paper performance are examined as a function of the sizing agent. While not all papermaking systems or paper grades are sensitive to the size type utilized, the commercial systems examined in this work do exhibit a sensitivity. New alkaline sizing agent technology is being developed with downstream performance as part of the critical path. Results indicated development size technologies provide downstream performance equal to acid sizing.
