This paper is a brief overview of a multi-client research program to show the viability of using post-consumer recycled waste fiber as a partial substitute for virgin fluff pulp. The study was designed to benefit converters of absorbent disposable such as baby diapers, adult incontinence products, feminine hygiene pads, and also airlaid roll goods producers for towels, wipes, and absorbent fabrics. The rationale for the study includes both the consumers’ recycling appeal and also to show possible methods of actually processing the wastepaper into a viable state for final end-use in a product. If at least some post-consumer fiber can be incorporated successfully into a new generation of disposable products, it would go along way toward relieving consumer criticism of the industry’s ongoing contribution to the solid waste problem.
