The increasing use of high yield (TMP, CTMP) and deinked pulps in combination with the closure of paper machine circuits, leads to an accumulation of the so called ‘trash material’. It is long known that TMP is next to CTMP the biggest source of trash material. Despite its effectively as trash catcher alum even at pH 5.5 is not too popular among those using mainly TMP because it affects brightness negatively, while at pH 6.8 it tends to form deposits in the circuit. As effective replacers for alum thus highly cationic low molecular weight polymers like p-DADMAC, p-ethylenimine or dicyandiamide are used and described in the literature. Most of the publications refer to acidic systems.
