Madhu Mahagaonkar, Karen Stack and Lawrie Dunn The University of Tasmania The effect of deinking using various alkali sources has been investigated. Magnesium oxide and ammonium hydroxide showed the same extent of ink removal as sodium hydroxide. Variations in the bleaching response of various alkalis were observed at the pulping stage. These observed differences can be explained by the hydrolyzing effect of the alkalis.
