New Biocide For North America, 1995 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

William Bunnage & Achim Schenker Grace Dearborn Inc. The use of slimicides as anti microbial agents, in the manufacture of pulp and paper is well documented. In recent years registration of such products has become more difficult, in part due to a higher level of government scrutiny. Increased emphasis is placed on slimicide handling, health and safety issues and fate in the environment characteristics. In 1993 Daracide 7816, dithiol, became the first slimicide approved, since 1986, in environmentally restrictive Sweden. The EPA has recently reviewed dithiol for use in the United States. This paper illustrates specific characteristics of dithiol that make it ideally suited for introduction as a biocide to the North American market. Desirable properties of slimicides are reviewed. Dithiol is assessed versus other commercially available pulp and paper slimicide actives. Mill studies are reported demonstrating successful utilization of dithiol for the control of microbiological growth.
