In doing so, they overlook the fact that cationic starch was developed specifically to improve both filler and total retention (1). According to Retulainen (2, 3, 4,) the addition of fines leads to an improvement in sheet strength. An additional measure of cationic starch further improves sheet strength (Figure l), although the influence of fines reduction has not been determined in this instance.
