Observations on the Measurement of the Moisture Content of Paper Through the Dryer Section, 1995 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

For many years Papermakers have relied on grab samples of the sheet exiting the press section and moisture scanners at the end of the dryer section to determine sheet moisture. The drying rate between these points was an unknown. Recently, JWI Group and NDC Systems have developed a modification of the Model 104P wet end gamma gage for use in the dryer section. When the 104PD can be brought in contact with the sheet in unobstructed draws, it yields sheet moisture as a percentage. Use of the gage on a variety of machines has provided an insight to the drying process and its relationship to sheet quality and machine efficiency.
